SHREK JR. THE MUSICAL- Calling all actors and actresses! Any interested student should plan to join Mr. Reilly and Mrs. Albers for a Shrek Jr. audition prep session Monday, November 6th after school in the cafeteria until 3:15. At this meeting students will learn about the main characters, get some acting and choreography tips and find out more about how the audition process works.

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION- We will be holding our annual Veterans Day celebration on Thursday, November 9th in the morning. Once again we would love for our students to invite a special veteran in to participate as an honored guest. The event will begin with breakfast from 8:00-8:30 in the cafeteria, and students who have a guest coming will be able to join him/her. Breakfast will be followed by an all school assembly in the gymnasium from 8:40-9:40. This event ultimately serves as one small gesture and an opportunity to pay respect to the men and women who have served our country as well as their families.

HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS- Although most of our students will be attending Ledyard High School, students have five other opportunities available upon leaving Ledyard Middle School. The following schools presented their programs to students on October 6th: Grasso Tech, Norwich Tech, Agri-Science at LHS, Marine Science HS, Science and Technology Magnet HS. Amanda Fagan, principal of Ledyard High School, also talked to our students. Each of the technical/magnet high schools will have an Open House that you are encouraged to attend if your child is interested in their program. These dates are available on the individual school’s websites. Applications will be available through Guidance or they can also be found on the school websites. Students are encouraged to complete and turn in their applications to guidance before the Thanksgiving holiday.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK (A NOTE FROM OUR GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT)- (This was originally supposed to be the week of November 13th but it was necessary to move it.) To grow in a well-rounded and responsible way, we all need to learn how to recognize and manage difficult emotions with coping and problem-solving skills. Even more importantly, we need to understand when to reach out for support. For this reason, we will be holding a Mental Health Awareness Week during the week of December 4th-8th . Through guidance classroom lessons, morning announcements, bulletin boards, and other school-wide initiatives we will be addressing the issues of mental health. Depression is a very common, yet widely overlooked disease that will impact 15 – 20% of young people before they reach adulthood. Our goals will include raising awareness of depression and its symptoms, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and encouraging the use of support services if necessary. The program was developed by Erika’s Lighthouse, a highly respected mental health education and advocacy organization. We look forward to working together to better inform students of important issues and to provide the tools students need to navigate challenging times.
As always, email or call one of our school counselors, Mrs. Patty Pollin or Mrs. Joanna Okosky with any questions or concerns ([email protected] for eighth grade and [email protected] for seventh grade).

PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD- The Prudential Spirit of Community Award is America’s largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. It recognizes students who have participated in meaningful activities for their communities. Students who have done so over the past year are invited to fill out an online application at spirit.prudential.com or nassp.org/spirit by November 7th. The application may then be submitted to Mr. Pomroy. The school’s top volunteer (if he/she has met a minimum number of volunteer hours) will become eligible to win $1,000 and an all-expenses paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C.

LEDYARD HIGH SCHOOL AGRI-SCIENCE- The Agri-Science Department will be hosting an 8th Grade Open House to all students who are interested in learning more about our Regional Agri-Science Program on November 9th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Interested eighth grade students and their parents should plan to attend this event. Additional information may be found also by visiting: www.ledyardagriscience.com.

STUDENT COUNCIL THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE- The LMS Student Council's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit the Ledyard Food Locker is under way. Please donate non-perishable food items, and turn them into your homeroom. We will accept donations until November 17th. The homeroom which collects the most items will earn a breakfast when they return from Thanksgiving break!
