PARENT / TEACHER CONFERENCES- Parent / Teacher conferences will be this Wednesday, November 15th from 1:00-3:00 and then again from 5:00-7:00. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested to come in and visit with any and all of your child’s teachers for roughly ten minutes per teacher to hear about how s/he is doing in her/his classes. All teachers will be in one of two locations; the cafeteria and the library. There are no scheduled visits, and you only need to show up and simply go to whoever it is you’d like to see. If someone is there ahead of you please just wait your turn, and the teacher will be able to meet with you within a short amount of time. In order to ensure all parents have time to meet with as many teachers as desired, please limit your time to ten minutes. In the event the conversation requires more time, please feel free to use a portion of your time to schedule a follow-up meeting individually. This will keep lines moving at a reasonable pace It will also ensure you all receive the appropriate attention.

HONORS ASSEMBLY- On Friday, November 17th we will be having our first quarterly Honors Assembly to recognize all of our students who achieved Honors, High Honors, or Highest Honors for the first marking period. The assembly is broken into two sessions by grade level. Seventh grade will have theirs first at 7:55, and eighth grade will be at 8:40. In addition to recognizing students for their academic achievement, we will also be recognizing students for outstanding character. In order to determine if your child will be receiving an honors certificate, please refer to her/his report card where there will be a note at the bottom indicating whether s/he made honors. All parents are invited to attend.

STUDENT COUNCIL REQUEST- The Student Council will be sponsoring our next dance this Friday, November 17th from 7:00-9:00. Tickets are $5 and will be available during lunches this week. In an effort to promote interest for more students to attend, the Student Council is planning a theme for the event, and as part of a picture station are in need of bails of hay. If anyone has a source of these and even better can help with the cost of these as much as possible please contact Ms. Jewel Clavin or Mr. Tom O’Brien at [email protected] or [email protected]. Any help is greatly appreciated!

STUDENT COUNCIL THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE- The LMS Student Council's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit the Ledyard Food Locker is under way. Please donate non-perishable food items, and turn them into your homeroom. We will accept donations until November 17th. The homeroom which collects the most items will earn a breakfast when they return from Thanksgiving break!

BASKETBALL TRYOUTS- Basketball tryouts will be held on Monday, November 20th and 21st. The sign-up sheets are in the office. Any interested students must sign-up ahead of time in order to be medically cleared by our nurse Mrs. Grace.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK (A NOTE FROM OUR GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT)- (This was originally supposed to be the week of November 13th but it was necessary to move it.) To grow in a well-rounded and responsible way, we all need to learn how to recognize and manage difficult emotions with coping and problem-solving skills.  Even more importantly, we need to understand when to reach out for support. For this reason, we will be holding a Mental Health Awareness Week during the week of December 4th-8th . Through guidance classroom lessons, morning announcements, bulletin boards, and other school-wide initiatives we will be addressing the issues of mental health. Depression is a very common, yet widely overlooked disease that will impact 15 – 20% of young people before they reach adulthood.   Our goals will include raising awareness of depression and its symptoms, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and encouraging the use of support services if necessary.  The program was developed by Erika’s Lighthouse, a highly respected mental health education and advocacy organization. We look forward to working together to better inform students of important issues and to provide the tools students need to navigate challenging times.

As always, email or call one of our school counselors, Mrs. Patty Pollin or Mrs. Joanna Okosky with any questions or concerns ([email protected] for eighth grade and [email protected] for seventh grade).
