PARENT / TEACHER CONFERENCES- Thank you very much to all who were able to visit us during parent/teacher conferences this past Wednesday. It is my hope that you found them to be informative and helpful. I also hope you feel as though you have a pretty good understanding about how your child(ren) is/are doing here at LMS. We are very proud to offer such a comprehensive program to all of our students, and are very fortunate to have such a high quality staff working with them each and every day. If you have any remaining questions please do not hesitate to email or call. We are always happy to help any way we can.

BASKETBALL TRYOUTS- Reminder that basketball tryouts will be held on Monday, November 20th and 21st.. In order to participate students must have signed up and been cleared medically by our nurse. The boys will be coached by Mr. Ron Johnson and will have the earlier time slot from 2:15-4:00 for tryouts as well as for the first few weeks of practice. The girls will be coached by Mr. Andrew Schulteis and will have the later time slot of 4:00-5:45 for tryouts as well as the first few weeks of practice. Pending these coaches’ work schedules the practice times beyond that are to be determined.

CHEER SQUAD- We have already begun sign-ups for our LMS cheer squad which will support our girls’ and boys’ basketball teams at home games. They will be coached by Mrs. Lori Dougherty who is also the LHS varsity cheer coach, and their practices will typically be at LHS in the evenings. Obviously transportation both to and from practices must be provided by parents. The first meeting/practice for cheer will be on Tuesday, November 28th at LHS from 6:30-8:30 p.m. All students interested in participating must be cleared medically by our nurse.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK (A NOTE FROM OUR GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT)- (This was originally supposed to be the week of November 13th but it was necessary to move it.) To grow in a well-rounded and responsible way, we all need to learn how to recognize and manage difficult emotions with coping and problem-solving skills.  Even more importantly, we need to understand when to reach out for support. For this reason, we will be holding a Mental Health Awareness Week during the week of December 4th-8th . Through guidance classroom lessons, morning announcements, bulletin boards, and other school-wide initiatives we will be addressing the issues of mental health. Depression is a very common, yet widely overlooked disease that will impact 15 – 20% of young people before they reach adulthood.   Our goals will include raising awareness of depression and its symptoms, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and encouraging the use of support services if necessary.  The program was developed by Erika’s Lighthouse, a highly respected mental health education and advocacy organization. We look forward to working together to better inform students of important issues and to provide the tools students need to navigate challenging times.

As always, email or call one of our school counselors, Mrs. Patty Pollin or Mrs. Joanna Okosky with any questions or concerns ([email protected] for eighth grade and [email protected] for seventh grade).
